A decade of volunteer service to BMX was recognised last week.

Carole Gillions was awarded a life membership to the Alexandra BMX Club for her years of volunteer service to the club and the wider sport of BMX.

While not in an official role at present, Gillions has been a constant presence with the club during the past decade, serving as president and treasurer, as well as doing some BMX New Zealand administration.

What started out as supporting her daughter when she started riding has developed into a love of the sport and the people who partake in it, she said.

‘‘I think the big thing to me is it’s a mixed age sport — people from 2 1/2 to 70-plus, it’s really accessible. ‘‘It’s a small sport but the BMX family is a real strength,’’ she said.
