Rugby players across Central Otago and further afield are finding their form ahead of the 2020 season.

Teams from around the district and beyond gathered in Clyde last weekend for the annual pre-season Clyde Earnscleugh Rugby Football Club’s 10s tournament.

Eight teams, who each had a starting line-up of 10 players, competed for a place in the finals, including teams from as far away as Dunedin and the Mackenzie.

For Dunedin’s Zingari team, it was a trip worth making after the team won the final against Cromwell. The teams won $1000 and $500 respectively, while Kurow went home with $300 for third place.

A spot prize of $200 was also up for grabs for the remaining teams, which went to Mackenzie this time around, and Ben Maxwell, of Cromwell, who was named player of the tournament.

Event organiser Cory Crosbie said the tournament, which is into its fifth year, was another great success.

And, with that in mind, it was already on the cards that it would return for its sixth year, he said.

“I started it as a fun thing and didn’t think it would be going this long.”

The recipe for its success appeared to be pretty simple.

“Everyone who turns up has fun and they all want to come back.”
