About 170 riders from throughout the South Island travelled to Omakau on Sunday for the first leg of the Southern Series Motocross competition.
The event was hosted by the Central Otago Motorcycle Club and was the first competition held on the club’s new track, which has been built on long-time member Graham Paton’s property.
Club president Ivan Taylor said the day was “brilliant” with a high standard of riding across all levels. Competitors ranged from 4 to 50 years of age, he said, and the club had received positive feedback about the track.
“It’s a good track with decent jumps.
“The more experienced riders appreciated the bigger jumps.”
The hotly contested MX1A class had 19 competitors – the highest number in several years – and was won by Campbell King, while the MX2A was won by Bryn Gilbert, of Alexandra.
Mr Taylor said most riders at the event would be setting their sights on the other events in the series at Mosgiel, Balclutha, Invercargill and Gore.
