People around the country are encouraged to check their earthquake preparedness this Thursday at 9.30am.
New Zealand ShakeOut (Whakahaumaru Aotearoa) is the national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi (evacuation).
Schools, workplaces and homes are reminded to drop, cover and hold for up to one minute.
ShakeOut is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake — Drop, Cover and Hold — and to practise a tsunami hikoi (evacuation) if in a coastal area.
