The New Zealand Gold Panning Championships are coming to the Alexandra Blossom Festival for the first time and Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust treasurer Odette Hopgood-Bride is encouraging people of all ages to enter.
‘‘We definitely want new people to think about panning.’’
The championships were due to take place in Arrowtown in April but were cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The trust was delighted the event could now take place in Alexandra.
Secretary Terry Davis said the event had been running for about 30 years.
Categories included ‘‘have a go’’, as well as sections for under-13s, women, men, teams, ‘‘classic’’, which used old-style metal pans, and speed panning.
Winners of the New Zealand championship could go on to compete internationally.
