Central Otago olive lovers have another chance to get fresh extra virgin olive oil straight from the press this weekend, when the Central Otago Olive Growers group holds its second Community Processing Day near Cromwell.
Cromwell Olive presser Stephen Morris said the Community Day oil pressed at last year’s inaugural event won a silver medal in the boutique category of the 2021 New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards.
The day would be a great way for backyard olive growers to get oil from their trees, he said, and for anyone interested to learn more about the fruit.
“It’s for anyone who is interested in olives and how they are processed,” he said.
Those without olive trees were welcome to pick olives on-site and get their own oil.
The olives would go into one large communal pressing with the resulting oil a reflection of Central Otago.
Each group of participants would receive a 250ml bottle of olive oil straight off the press.
The event runs from 10am-2pm on Saturday. Hot soup, tea and coffee would be available.
Registrations could be made by email at firstname.lastname@example.org and were recommended, Mr Morris said.
