The Dunstan High School Under-15 team raised about $5100 in six hours last Sunday through a Monster Garage Sale and selling firewood.
Money raised will go towards their trip to Invercargill for the Rural Livestock junior rugby tournament at the end of the month.
During the half hour Central Otago News was there, one woman did not buy anything but donated $20, and another two each gave $20 notes for $10 worth of goods and did not want change.
Team manager Justine Baird, who operated the till, said that happened quite often during the day.
Two coaches, two managers and 27 players will head to Invercargill to play against teams from 17 other schools from throughout the South Island from August 30 to September 2.
Coach Jono Love said they needed to raise as much money as possible to go towards transport, accommodation, food, activities, a team dinner, jerseys and hoodies.
Miss Baird said many families and businesses connected with the players provided sponsorship or contributed to costs.
“I want to thank the community and the sponsors as their support has been amazing.
“We have been pleased at how much sponsorship we have received, which was much more than we expected, especially particularly as it has been such a tough year.”
