Cyclist in the making . . . Alexandra cyclist Nicole Shields (17) is competing at the Junior World Track Cycling World Championships in Montichirari, in Italy, in August. Shields, who is in year 13 at Dunstan High School, has been training in Invercargill for the past few weeks and later this month will go to an international track event in Melbourne before returning to Cambridge for further preparation ahead of going to Italy on August 13. Shields has been selected to compete in the team pursuit and a yet-to-be-announced individual event. Last year she competed in the Junior World Track Cycling World Championships in Switzerland as a member of the second-placed team in the team pursuit. “I would be happy to do one better this year,” she said. Shields hopes to continue her cycling career to the World Championships and the Olympics. “This year I go into elite [level]. I am looking forward to the opportunity to travel with the sport, meet people and see where cycling takes me,” she said.
