Two truckloads of 800mm diameter piping was unloaded in Waikerikeri Valley Rd, near Alexandra, on Monday, signalling the start of the $9million Dairy Creek Irrigation Scheme

The scheme will irrigate about 1500ha of land in the lower Manuherikia Valley, taking water from Lake Dunstan and through the Waikerikeri Valley to Golden Rd.

The scheme is a 50-50 joint venture between the Dairy Creek Irrigation Company (DCIC) and Pioneer Energy, and is expected to be completed in November.

About 140 pipes, or about 2100m, of that size will eventually be used and each pipe weighs 1148kg.

Pioneer Energy’s Tony Jack is the project manager for the scheme.

He said the pipeline would run from Lake Dunstan to Waikerikeri Valley Rd and end up close to Golden Rd.

He expected laying the pipeline and the electrical components installation to be completed in October, and water should start flowing in November.
