The Wanaka Football Club regained its Central Otago Football League crown on Saturday, winning the final game of the season against the Frankton Rebels, 4-0.
Wanaka head coach and player Allan Carmichael said the ‘‘fantastic’’ victory was two years in the making.
‘‘We won in 2012 and 2013 but then lost in the last two years,’’ he said.
Although Frankton dominated possession in Saturday’s match, the Wanaka players took no chances with their defence and shooting.
Centre Ed Rawlings had produced a stand-out performance. ‘‘It was especially remarkable, as it was his first game for the season after suffering a fractured hip,’’ Carmichael said.
Goals were scored by veteran player and assistant coach Ian Bell, striker Matt Florida, and Carmichael while a late goal from left wing Aiden Butler capped off the win.
Carmichael said the victory was especially sweet as it was on ‘‘home soil’’ with a full squad.
