Lake Hawea multisport coach Matty Graham could not race in the recent Coast to Coast multisport event in 1983 retro style as he had planned because of changes caused by the Covid-19 traffic light system and foul weather.

However, weather depending, Graham plans to tackle the original 1983 course at the end of this month with race pioneers Joe Sherriff, of Alexandra, and Alister Metherell, of Christchurch, before returning to do the race next year.

The Coast to Coast event celebrated its 40th anniversary this year and Graham had planned to pay homage by racing in retro gear, with the goal of making a film.

However, just the one-day race went ahead, to limit potential exposure to Covid, while the weather forced organisers to drastically alter the course.

Graham said his project was “100% still on” and despite the disappointment of not participating this year, “it almost worked out better for us . . . We have more time to get filming done.”
