Stopping sparks from flying

Riders taking part in this year’s Wanaka Trail Ride will be encouraged to prevent fires by having a spark arrester fitted. Marshal and track manager Phil Pendlebury said as the event was taking place earlier in the year and as warm weather and prolonged dry conditions continued to create fire risk in many areas, the decision was made to make spark arresters compulsory for all vehicles to be ridden on the tracks. People were encouraged to have them fitted before attending, but all bikes would be checked at the gates and any without a spark arrester would be asked to get one fitted. A basic arrestor would be able to be fitted locally at a reasonable price. This year’s trail ride begins on Saturday, March 30. Visit wanakatrailride.org for details.
