Hundreds of women traversed Central Otago’s rugged terrain on Saturday during the annual Spring Challenge multi-challenge adventure race.

The event, which took place in the Cromwell area, attracted 1440 competitors from far and wide, who made up 480 teams across three, six and nine-hour categories.

Spring Challenge, which is hosted in a different location each year, consistently features rafting, mountain biking and trekking segments.

Cromwell competitors Melissa McEldowney, Amy Hore and Caroline Berendt were among the fastest teams, finishing 7th in the open six-hour category in 8hr 37sec.

McEldowney said the event was “tough”.

“It was very, very challenging. I don’t want to see an uphill for a while, but it was good. It was great once you got your head in it,” she said, just moments after crossing the finish line at Bendigo Station.

Next year’s event will take place in Christchurch. REPORT: ALEXIA JOHNSTON
