Sisters Liz McRae and Mary Hore share the same birthday, eight years apart, as well as a love of golf. They have just been named in the Otago fours team for the New Zealand Women’s Masters Championship being hosted in Alexandra this weekend.

Fourteen teams of four players from Northland to Southland will play at Alexandra Golf Club from tomorrow, after a practice round and formal dinner today.

The Otago team consists of Mrs McRae (Wanaka), Susan Greig and Tracy Storer (Dunedin), and Mrs Hore (Alexandra).

The pair grew up on Cluden Station in Tarras, owned by their Purvis family, where half of the local golf course was on the property.

Both parents played golf, and their mother represented Otago in the interprovincial team, so they learned the game as young girls.

Mrs Hore, who moved to Galloway three years ago, said the town was lucky to have “this wonderful 18-hole course”.
