Hundreds of female athletes will congregate in Alexandra today as the town prepares to host its first Spirited Women All Women’s Adventure Race.
About 800 women are registered for the event, which starts with a registration expo today, followed by the competition on Saturday and prizegiving on Sunday.
Competitors will cycle, kayak and trek throughout the event, which will include free activities along the way.
They will compete in teams of four, over staggered start times, from 5.45am to 10.45am.
Event manager Kezia Trask said the first groups to finish were likely to start coming in from 1.30pm, up until about 10pm.
She said all other details were “top secret”.
They do not find out any of the race details until Friday night, including the course.
“Then they have the evening to look over it and decide what route they are going to take.”
Teams compete in a short, medium or long-course to suit all levels of fitness and experience.
A North Island event will also take place in Hawke’s Bay in March.
Miss Trask said although they were one-off races, not a series, it was likely some teams would do both.
