Alexandra’s BMX riders are gearing up for the 2016-17 season, with riders ready to race at the open day later this month.
Alexandra BMX Club president Tony Nelson said the club was looking forward to an exciting season.
Membership numbers exceeded expectations last year and this year the club was hoping for more people to get involved with the sport.
‘‘There’s been a lot of interest in BMX. I don’t know if it’s to do with the Olympics or Trent Jones doing really well but there is a whole lot of following this season. I’m expecting a big season,’’ Nelson said.
The club had also had a range of successes last season, with five riders competing at Oceanias.
Facebook had also got more people involved as they watched what the club and its riders were up to, he said.
‘‘There’s a couple of goals this season. We want to build the club even stronger and get some of the riders to come and be competitive and go and compete against other riders.’’
The club was working to get more coaching and development for BMX riders in the lower South, he said.
The next scheduled event is the open day on Sunday, September 18.
To compete at the open day, riders need to be registered to a club that is affiliated to BMX New Zealand.
Nelson said if people just wanted to come along to have a go, they could do that at the end of the day, and there would be people available to talk to.
Entries for the open day close on September 14. – For more information, contact Tony Nelson on 027 274-4402.
