John Leyser (skip), Kevin Hurley, Ev Bisset and Gloria Hurley will represent the Southern South Island Zone at the national final on July 23-24.
Central Otago Indoor Bowls Association tournament controller Dave Moreton said the win was something of a surprise.
The competition comprises three stages. Teams consisting of two males and two females must win their district and zone competitions to determine the representative at the New Zealand final.
‘‘The Southern South Island Zone is made up of teams from Southland, South Otago, Otago (Dunedin) and Central Otago and had competed over games of 10 ends on a round-robin basis’’ Mr Moreton said.
On Saturday, the Cromwell-based Central Otago team took honours after drawing with Otago 8-8, defeating South Otago 10-2 and winning national 7-4 against the Southland team skippered by national representative Gary Low.
Mr Moreton said the pairs competition ‘‘went more to expectation with the Southland combination of Grant Fortune and Maree Swain remaining unbeaten and winning the zone title’’.
‘‘The third and last round was looking interesting as Central Otago (Kevin and Gloria Hurley) took a threepoint lead against Southland midway through the game but Southland finished strongly, winning the last four ends to take the game 14-8,’’ Mr Moreton said.
In the other game, Otago defeated South Otago 11-5 to finish second.
