Central Otago Whitewater club kayakers made a strong showing at last weekend’s 2018 Canoe Slalom New Zealand National Championships at the Tekapo Whitewater Course, rubbing shoulders with Australasian greats including Olympic medallists Luuka Jones and Mike Dawson.

The event came hot on the heels of the previous week’s New Zealand Secondary Schools Whitewater Championships, held at the Hawea Whitewater Park.

Among the results of the national event was Finn Butcher, of Alexandra, taking the 2018 K1 men’s and U23 whitewater slalom titles, and fellow Alexandra kayaker Lotte Rayner winning a clutch of K1 and C1 women’s and junior titles.

Other Central Otago kayakers who earned national titles were Kensa Randle, Madi Gainsford, James Suddaby, Aiden Cassidy, Roy Bailey and Ngaio Hart.
