Wanaka’s junior snow sports athletes are now taking their turn to bask in glory on snow sport podiums.

Following the success of Wanaka athletes at the Winter Paralympics and Winter Olympic, Cam Melville Ives (15) and Luca Harrington (18) last week notched up silver medals at the Park & Pipe Junior World Championships in Leysin, Switzerland.

Cam claimed his silver medal in the snowboard slopestyle after lacing together a front 1080, back 1260 and a switch back 1260 on the jumps. It was the first time he had landed this technical combination in competition.

Snow Sports New Zealand coach Mitch Brown said Cam always performed well under pressure after a disappointing first run.

“He kept it cool and aced his second run with a personal best competition run.”

Harrington got his silver medal in the freeski big air after executing a triple 1620 with a safety grab and a huge switch double 1800 with a lead tail grab.

Other athletes in action at the championships included:

Dane Menzies (16), Wanaka, 16th in the snowboard slopestyle

Fin Melville Ives (15), Wanaka, 12th in the freeski big air

Harper Souness (16), Queenstown, 16th in freeski big air.
