Central Otago cricketers will take to the crease this weekend for an informal pre-season tournament with two Dunedin teams.

The tournament, taking place in Poolburn on Saturday, will feature three games between an Otago Country Cricket side and the Carisbrook Dunedin and North East Valley Cricket Clubs.

First up will be Otago Country playing Carisbrook, followed by Carisbrook v North East Valley.

The tournament will finish with a match between Otago Country and North East Valley.

Otago Country vice-captain Tim McCormick said snow across the district earlier in the week was no deterrent.

“It will be good for the city boys to see some snow on the hills.”

A range of promising players are in the Otago Country team, including Cameron Jackson, who was last season’s Otago under-17 team captain and also played for the Otago under-19 side.

Reece Collin, who is in the Otago under-19 training squad, will also play for Otago Country, along with brothers Reuben and James Pyle.

James Pyle has the additional role of captain.

Former first-class cricketer for the Otago Volts Sam Blakely, of the Maniototo, will also take to the pitch for the Otago Country side, along with Barry White and Bailey Andrews-Kennedy.

McCormick said the match would be an opportunity to “dust off the rust”.

“[It’s a chance] to get everything back going and get into cricket again,” he said.

The tournament is expected to start at 10.30am.
