It has been a busy start to the year for Bike Wanaka members, who are gearing up for social rides and the national mountain bike championships.
Events committee member Ewan Mackie said the social rides were a way for riders to get to know one another and find riding partners who had a similar schedule.
The social rides also gave newer riders a chance to explore different trails with other bikers.
The sport of mountain biking had grown massively in Wanaka over the years, he said, and Bike Wanaka now had more than 700 members.
Mountain biking events around Wanaka, such as the Contact Epic and Dean’s Bank 10 Hour had “grown and grown” and also helped to raise the profile of Wanaka as a mountain-biking destination.
Bike Wanaka was preparing for the national championships at Cardrona this weekend, which would include both cross-country and downhill events.
“That’ll attract the top riders from New Zealand, Australia and all around the world.”
Members would be busy volunteering at the event, but more hands on deck would always be appreciated, he said.
