Members of the Wanaka Trampoline and Tumbling Club have won a trio of gold medals.
Jessica Penney (11), Deia Carson-Wolfe (14) and Elizabeth Pell (10), all of Wanaka, won gold at the 2018 National Gymsports Championships, held recently in Tauranga.
Deia won the 13 to 14-year-old age group individual trampoline event, while Jessica topped the 11 to 12-year-old girls’ synchronised trampoline, alongside Aisha Mulligan, of Waikato.
Elizabeth won gold in the 10 years old and under girls’ synchronised trampoline, alongside Shanti Heaton-McKoy, of Waikato.
It was “fun and tough” going to the nationals, but she was “proud of herself” winning gold, Jessica said.
Deia said she prepared for the competition by memorising her routines and doing “lots of practising, and getting in the right zone”.
Elizabeth said she was “extremely excited and a little bit nervous” at the beginning of the competition, but was very proud to have won gold.
Other members of the team also made it to the podium. Skyla Coll and Piper Carson-Wolfe (both 9), both of Wanaka, won bronze in the 10 years old and under synchronised trampoline category.
Head coach Catherine Pell said eight members of the Wanaka club qualified to be part of the Otago team to go to the nationals.
“So the Otago team comprises the eight we have in Wanaka, and there were four athletes from Dunedin as well.”
Pell, who is also coach of the Otago team, said winning three gold and two bronze medals at the nationals amounted to an “amazing performance”.
Pell was also a winner, coming back with the coach’s medal.
