January was a good month for Bowls Central Otago, with both the women’s and men’s teams taking the winner’s trophies in the annual Southern Zone Six competitions.

Team managers and administrators said it was the first time in their collective memory that both teams had won the tournament in the same year.

Southern Zone Six is made up of teams from Dunedin, Southland, Central Otago, North Otago, South Otago and South Canterbury.

Men’s team manager Marty Geary said the team was not doing well after the first day of competition in Balclutha on January 29, ending the day’s play fifth out of the six teams.

The bowlers rallied well the following day, with three of their four teams winning the day’s first round, round four of the weekend contest.

“Then in round five, we got the maximum points and finished four points ahead of the second place,” he said.

Women’s team manager Neil Buchanan said the team was happy to not only win the trophy but to also bring home the aggregate shield for the first time, awarded for the highest combined total for development and senior players.

“The ladies were two points in front on the first day and winning the development section, and the seniors carried on and won the trophy.”
