Cycling club gets help to keep riders safe

A grant to be used for cycle race traffic management is a ‘‘big game changer’’ for the Central Otago Wakatipu Cycling Club, president Ed Taylor says.
The $6000 grant from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) would allow the club to offer another ‘‘great season of racing’’, he said.
The No 1 priority for the club was ‘‘providing the safest road racing possible’’.
‘‘Over the past few years the number of vehicles on local roads has increased dramatically.’’
The club had handled traffic management inhouse ‘‘primarily through one club member who did a fantastic job of getting our races approved with local authorities and organising for signs to be put out’’, Mr Taylor said.
But traffic increases had meant employing an outside traffic management company for the past two seasons, which put a financial burden on the club.
‘‘We have put up our club fees and organised other fundraising initiatives but the funding from NZCT has been the big game changer and means we can look forward to another great season of racing around Central Otago and Wakatipu.’’
