Alexandra’s BMX riders have hit the track biking fast this season, with five riders winning plates at the North Island Titles.
Eleven riders from the Alexandra BMX Club travelled to Cambridge to compete in the event, which was held at Labour Weekend.
Club president Tony Nelson said winning the five plates had been the club’s greatest success at the North Island Titles.
“We are absolutely stoked, for the amount of riders we took up, to have five finish in the top four was great.”
Ben James was second in the 10-year-old boys, Tamai Riwhi was third in the 7-year-old girls, Lachie James was third in the 11-12-year-old cruisers, Holly Oldham was fourth in the 13-year-old girls and Tahlia Nelson was fourth in the 9-year-old girls sections.
Nelson said he was incredibly proud of the riders, who have only competed in one club meet this season so far.
“The North Island guys don’t really have an off-season. Our club riders had only done one club meet before we went up. We hadn’t done much compared to the North Island riders.”
The club riders had gone to Cambridge with the hopes of winning a couple of plates, but no-one expected them to win five, Nelson said.
All 11 of the riders who competed did better than they had at other competitions, against riders they had faced before.
“We were absolutely stoked with the outcome,” he said.
The next big events on the calendar for the club are the Central Otago Championships and the Mainland South Region Championships, which are both on next weekend.
