A new curling tournament has been welcomed to the ice in Alexandra.

The John Webb Memorial Lowburn Curling Challenge, the latest of its kind to be brought to IceInLine, took place last weekend.

Lowburn Curling Club president Murray Kennedy said the event would return annually.

“This was planned as a social event to get as many curlers together as possible early in the season.”

It was also an opportunity to “get some ice under our feet early and have some fun while we wait for winter to arrive”, he said.

The tournament featured five Lowburn teams.

Those teams challenged a range of neighbouring curling clubs – Cardrona, Arrowtown, Alexandra, Manorburn and Chatto Creek.

“It was a great day, with 40 people curling on the ice at once.”

The trophy was presented by the Webb family in memory of John Webb, who was a “well-respected” local identity in Cromwell and in the horticultural industry.

He had a passion for curling and was a member of the Lowburn Club for many years until his death in 2012, Mr Kennedy said.
