Junior anglers in Central Otago have the chance to not only catch a rainbow trout but to win one of three rod and reel sets in a junior fishing competition run by Otago Fish and Game.

Otago Fish & Game officer Bruce Quirey said 200 rainbow trout had been released into Butchers Dam, near Alexandra, for the competition.

“Three of these beautifully conditioned rainbows are marked with an orange tag in the dorsal fin,” he said.

“If a junior angler catches a tagged fish, send us a photo of the fish with the tag still attached to win a rod and reel.”

The competition is open to all licensed anglers aged 17 years and under.

Photos of the tagged fish should be emailed to or, together with the angler’s name and phone number.
