Members of Central Otago and Queenstown bowling clubs are celebrating after reaching the podium at the New Zealand open fours, held recently at Naenae in Lower Hutt.

Winning silver at the women’s fours was the composite team of Anne Dorreen, of Auckland, Linley O’Callaghan of Alexandra, Christine Buchanan and Margaret O’Connor, both of Queenstown.

It was the first time any of the women had got to the finals, Ms O’Callaghan said.

“So it is a big deal to us, for a little place like Central Otago.”

Winning bronze at the men’s fours were Pat Houlahan, of Alexandra, Howard O’Donnell, of Clyde, Roger O’Brien, of Alexandra and Conor Muir, of Clyde. Mr Houlahan said this was the first time “in my lifetime of playing bowls” that a Central Otago team had got to the final stage.

The teams were playing against the rest of the country with about 112 teams for the men’s and 44 teams for the women’s, he said.

The tournament featured members of the New Zealand squad, the Black Jacks.
