Kiwi rowing great Hamish Bond will be the speaker at one of Central Otago’s first big events since Covid-19 restrictions loosened.

The Central Otago Sports Awards are scheduled for an indoor venue in Wanaka in early May, though details of date and venue are still being worked on.

The nomination period closes on April 8 and Sports Otago spokesman Kelvin Carruthers expected a galaxy of sporting stars in the line up.

“The awards will be a fabulous occasion; with a formal dress code, three-course seated meal and an outstanding guest speaker in three-time Olympic gold medallist, Hamish Bond.”

There are several categories for senior and junior sportsmen and women and a new addition, para athlete or team of the year.

Promising athletes will also be acknowledged through “Spirit of Central” awards, while the John Fitzharris Memorial is a lifetime award for services to sport.

The awards recognise athletes’ achievements from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.
