Country Day was revived at the weekend with a feast of rugby action in Central Otago. It was Alexandra’s turn to host the annual Central Premier versus Southern Premier match with the Topp Cup at stake. Otago Country Rugby board chairman Bob Perriam said the programme on Monday was extended this year to include eight games, in a return of the Country Day style of country rugby on display. As well as Topp Cup action, the development squads, under-13, under-14 and under-6 Central and Southern representative squads were in action. For the first time, a secondary schoolgirls’ match was staged as part of the day and clashes between First XV teams from South Otago, Wakatipu and Dunstan High Schools and Mt Aspiring College also formed part of the programme. Central retained the Topp Cup, beating Southern by 29-24.
