Primary school pupils took to the field for a rippa day of action on Monday.

More than 50 teams from 13 schools took part in the Dunstan Zone Rippa Rugby Tournament, which feeds in to the new Central Otago Rippa Rugby competition.

Tournament co-ordinator Michael Dalgliesh said previously the tournament fed into the Otago competition based in Dunedin.

However a new Central Otago event was developed with Upper Clutha, Wanaka and Dunstan zones through the Central Otago Primary Schools Sports Association.

“We sort of thought that every other event in this area has a Central Otago event so why doesn’t Rippa.”

The tournament had been running for “five or six years”.

“We always have 50 or more teams enter and they always ask if they can enter more teams, and so that’s why we put the cap on it because it is extremely popular.

“There’s no standing around yeah, that’s what its all about,” Dalgliesh said.
