Two Alexandra locals have been accepted on the New Zealand National Men Under-20 Ice Hockey Team.
Tazmin Hall and Ben Miller will be representing New Zealand at the International Ice Hockey Under-20 World Championships in Reykjavik, Iceland, taking place in January 2019.
‘‘It has been one of my goals to play for the under-20s New Zealand team,’’ Hall said.
He had been playing for five years, and enjoyed the ‘‘fast pace’’ and ‘‘high speeds’’ involved in the game.
It took a ‘‘lot of physicality’’ to play ice hockey, he said.
Ben Miller had been playing for eight years including competitions across the world in Canada, Australia, Taiwan and Finland.
Being in the Under-20 Ice Hockey team was ‘‘the next step up’’ for Miller.
Having been in the Under-18 team previously, there was an element of beginning again.
‘‘You’ve worked your way through the under-18s . . .and now you are starting at the bottom again, earning your spot in the team.’’
The challenge for Reykjavik would be a short amount of time with the new team, Miller said.
‘‘We’ve only got two tournaments with the people we are going away with and the training camp is going to be very short, so we won’t have a lot of time to learn the team structures.’’
Players had also been selected from Queenstown, Dunedin, Christchurch and Auckland. The athletes will compete in division three of the competition against countries including South Africa, Bulgaria, and China.
