The Clyde/Earnscleugh Rugby Club is to host its second annual 10-a-side tournament next week.
Club coach Cory Crosbie said eight teams had accepted the club’s invitation to play at the Clyde grounds on February 25.
The teams are from Maniototo, Cromwell, Alexandra, Clyde/Earnscleugh, Upper Clutha, Wakatipu, Woodlands (near Invercargill) and Clutha Valley.
“We held the Speight’s Clyde/Earnscleugh Rugby 10s tournament for the first time last year and from a coach’s point of view it is a good way to trial new players,” Crosbie said.
He said each team fielded 10 players. The first game would start at 10am and the final would be played at 5.30pm.
This year there would be a trophy, donated by sponsor Speight’s, which would remain with the host club, as well as a smaller one for the winning club to take home.
In addition to the games, the emphasis would be on a family fun day out, with food stalls and activities for the children, including face painting.
“There will be a secret team challenge at halftime at 3pm and we hope to have a celebrity to MC on the day, although that is to be confirmed,” he said.
Everyone was welcome to attend the after-match function.
Any profits from the event will go towards the club’s fundraising for the ground’s lighting upgrade.
