Countdown supermarket in Alexandra is beginning to take shape as precast concrete wall panels begin to give the building its final form.

The supermarket, set on a .8ha site bordering Centennial Ave and Ventry St, is set to break New World’s monopoly on large-scale grocery retail in the town.

Work has progressed in stages since the project was granted resource consent in January 2021, including the removal and demolition of houses on the site to make way for the development.

Countdown’s parent company, Woolworths NZ, has yet to announce an opening date but has tentatively set it for later this year.
