The Otago Central Rail Trail has again been recognised as New Zealand’s Favourite Great Ride, at a presentation at the Cellar Door last Thursday.
It is the second time the rail trail has been awarded the title, which has been organised by the New Zealand Transport Agency for the past four years.
This year’s competition included more than 10,000 nominations for 1200 different rides.
Otago Central Rail Trail Charitable Trust chairwoman Kate Wilson said the rail trail was an iconic New Zealand experience.
“I think it still captures people’s imagination of New Zealand.
“This is a really great place to cycle. It’s the smells, the sights .. it’s where town meets country.”
The rail trail brought other investment into the area, such as accommodation and meals, she said, with the great coffee and food along the trail adding to the tourism experience
Ensuring the rail trail remained popular and enjoyable involved collaboration between local operators and business owners along the trail, she said.
“We’ve got a really passionate group.”
The West Coast’s Old Ghost Road was a close second in the award.
