A taskforce of career firefighters from Dunedin arrived in Roxburgh on Monday, complete with fire engine and ute carrying additional equipment, to help their volunteer counterparts deal with the aftermath of an intense storm on Sunday afternoon.

Senior officer Simon Smith and five other firefighters stayed at the Ettrick Lodge overnight after spending their day helping where needed.

“Our role is to support the volunteers, as they have worked pretty hard for the past 24 hours and they are doing an awesome job.”

He said they assessed the area when they arrived and helped out where they could.

“We have been clearing out drains of mud, washing down trucks as the silt dries like concrete, providing a water source from the river and doing welfare checks.”

They were also planning to help clean out the Roxburgh Area School pool on Tuesday.
