Work is going ahead to plan for the opening of a large Countdown supermarket in Alexandra, with tenders out for sub-contractors and most of the boxing for foundations due to be completed before Christmas.

Countdown’s director of property Matt Grainger said the Alexandra community was growing and the company was excited about the delivery of a Countdown store to the area.

“The Centennial Ave site has been cleared and ground work is now under way for the new 3000sq m store, which is scheduled to open late 2022,” he said.

Owners’ representative Simon Wearing, of ICL Chartered Accountants in Alexandra, said work had progressed on the site, with a new sewerage line put in and a bridge built over it, an acoustic fence erected to reduce construction noise for neighbours, and the procurement process started for sub-contractors.

The store’s detailed design was largely complete and the foundations being excavated, with 80% of foundations expected to be boxed by Christmas and the remainder in the new year.

“One of the challenges around the procurement (process) is the building is being built to a Green Star building code,” Mr Wearing said, with a four-star rating being sought.

Green Star certification is a formal process managed by the New Zealand Green Building Council to rate a building’s performance and environmental impact.
