Work to keep the Clyde bridge working well in the Central Otago climate is taking place this month before the bridge’s deck is resealed.
The bridge, which is 82 years old, will be closed between 8am and 6pm until tomorrow night, and during the same times from Monday to Friday next week.
The road across the Clyde dam has been opened to traffic as a detour during the times that the bridge is closed.
“The bridge needs to be able to move in the different climate conditions and there are gaps between each section of bridge deck to allow this to happen,” Central Otago District Council roading manager Murray Hasler said.
“We have cleaned out the joins and put new covers over them. We want to make as smooth a ride as we can.”
Mr Hasler said it was great to have an alternative route close by so that there was little disruption to traffic.
