Laughter and hidden innuendo filled the room when the Oturehua Hall committee hosted a celebrity debate last weekend.

The event, a fundraiser for the hall, attracted more than 100 people, keen to catch some of the action while also supporting the cause.

Debaters spoke on the topic of “we would rather be yuppies than yokels”, an argument won by the “yokels” team.

Among them was broadcaster and columnist Jim Hopkins, former Act Party MP Hilary Calvert and Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan.

Gerry Eckhoff, and is a former Act Party MP, also joined the panel, along with National MP for the Waitaki electorate Jacqui Dean and Ranfurly veterinarian Michael Lilley, who won the New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year title in 2012.

Event MC Amie Pont said the event was a great success.

“We’ve had huge response from people saying how hilarious it was.”

The event also featured silent and live auctions, which was also a great success, she said.

“The auctions went very well. Everything was bidded on . . . and the amount of support from sponsors was wonderful.”
