The Alexandra BMX Club hosted the Central Otago BMX Championships at the weekend, though heavy rain on Saturday meant the finals had to be postponed to Sunday due to the track being too wet.

Club president Taiwha Nelson said the good weather on Sunday and hard work allowed the track to dry.

“Lots of hard work was put in by our track crew and volunteers from other clubs by spreading lime and compacting the track to make it better riding,” she said.

One hundred and fifty riders attended the races from all over the South Island, and more than 50 came from Christchurch.

Young Sprocket (riders aged 7 and under) rider Jack Palfi, of Christchurch, was unable to ride his balance bike on Saturday due to the track being too soft to gain speed, but on Sunday he had the newly dried track to himself between qualifying motos and finals, Mrs Nelson said.
