Toy library on lookout for new Wanaka premises

Wanaka’s accommodation crisis is not just hitting first-home buyers and young families – the town’s toy library is also feeling the pinch.

The group, which houses 800 toys for hire, has to move out of its Reece Cr premises after its lease expired and the landlord decided it wanted the facility back, library treasurer Arda Booiman said.

She has welcomed the challenge of finding somewhere else to go and was grateful to the landlord for giving the group time to do that.

However, the group has yet to come up with any possible options.

Ideally, the new facility would need to be about 70sqm, in order to store all of its toys, games and party equipment.

Mrs Booiman said while the Reece Cr rooms, which were 55sqm, had been a great location and facility for many years, something slightly larger would be more practical.

Good accessible parking was also needed.

The group has not been given a date by which it has to move out, but Mrs Booiman hoped a new site would be found within about two months, if not earlier.

The Wanaka Toy Library has a membership of 120 families, which often fluctuates as people move to and from the area.

A range of membership options are available, ensuring all young families can benefit, no matter what their financial constraints are.
