Dr Jordana “Dana” Tafatu holds her prize after her winning gumboot throw of 17.7m last Friday as part of Dunstan Hospital’s acknowledgement of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Staff took part in “Gumboot Friday”, inspired by Mike King’s I Am Hope Foundation.

Central Otago Health Services Ltd chief executive Dr Kathy de Luc said staff were invited to come to work wearing gumboots – that were clean of course.

The incentives included a prize for the best decorated pair of boots.

A gumboot-throwing competition on the hospital’s lawn was followed by cake and gumboot tea.

Champion throwers were two of the hospital’s doctors: Dr Tafatu led the way in the women’s competition and Jonathon Wills took the men’s boot with a throw of 25.1m.
