A solar system display along the Otago Central Rail Trail is just one star away from completion.
The sculpture of the sun is all that is needed to complete the display, which is already a work in progress, thanks to a range of ideas submitted by the public.
Cromwell farmer Ian Begg contacted the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust with the display idea, with the aim of showing people the scale of the solar system as they cycle the trail.
A range of stakeholders have been supporting the project.
Now, five years on, design ideas are being finalised for the sun sculpture, after the trust called on the public for suggestions.
Four ideas were submitted, and one of those was now being considered, trust chairwoman Kate Wilson said.
She said the quality of the ideas submitted was “outstanding”, which made the job of selecting one a “really challenging” process.
The trust plans to put its preferred design out to the public and Central Otago District Council.
“We want to make sure we are pitching it in the right way.”
It plans to do that very soon, she said.
“We’re just trying to get some things in place – to have more focus groups involved in that [selection] process.”
Mrs Wilson is keen to hear from anyone who has further suggestions.
