Collecting used prescription glasses and sunglasses is Lions Club of Cromwell district co-ordinator Andy Andrews.
The glasses are sent to the Lions Club of Ferrymead, in Christchurch, where they are cleaned and calibrated before being provided for people in the Pacific Islands.
The club has been collecting glasses for the last 15 years, providing tens of thousands of glasses that are passed on to new owners via organisations including the Fred Hollows Foundation. S
unglasses were also helpful for people who had cataract surgery while their eyes recovered, Mr Andrews said.
The Lions Club’s International Fund also carried out free eye tests at the Special Olympics sporting events and provided free glasses. Anyone who had a spare pair of glasses or sunglasses they no longer needed could drop them off at the Cromwell Pharmacy, or contact Mr Andrews on 21 842-346.
