It’s been five years in the making but the Alexandra Petanque Club has a new home.
After outgrowing its four pistes, or courts, at the Alexandra District Club, the club has relocated beside the Alexandra Bowling Club, in Poole Rd.
It now has 12 pistes.
Club president Allan Motion said it had been quite a journey to find the right location but it felt good to have a new home.
“It’s been a long process and we’ve finally made it,” he said.
“We’ve been all around town looking for a place.
The club had raised the bulk of the $20,000 for the complex, and community sponsorship and voluntary manpower had helped get the project over the line.
It took six months to complete the complex, which included building fences and seating, and levelling the ground.
Sun shades in the summer would cap the area off and the bowling club was letting the petanque club use its building facilities.
Club captain Liz Baxter said the new facility was wonderful for the players.
“I think by the time it’s done, its going to be the best petanque facility in the South Island,” she said.
The new complex will officially opened on Monday, with a special match between Central Otago District Mayor Tim Cadogan and Vincent Community Board chairman Martin McPherson, at 1.30pm.
Each will be paired with a former New Zealand petanque representative for the match.
Members of the public are invited to attend.
