Lieutenant-colonel Lisa Kelliher has carried out a different kind of duty during her latest visit to Alexandra.

Lt-col Kelliher, who is a military adviser based in Canberra, visited children at St Gerard’s and Alexandra Primary School on Friday morning to talk about the work she does serving in the army.

Her first visit of the day was to St Gerard’s, which she attended as a young girl, and where her niece, Shannon Kelliher (13), now goes.

Lt-col Kelliher shared her journey with the children in years 4-8, explaining how she got into the army and the places where she has worked since.

Her army career started 26 years ago after she finished at Dunstan High School.

Her initial plan was to attend the University of Otago.

However, she went along with some friends to the local army recruitment office, where she was selected.

She has since served in locations including East Timor, Sinai, Afghanistan and Iraq.

For each of those deployments she received medals, which she wore during her primary school visits. She shared information about them with the children.

Lt-col Kelliher also visited Alexandra Primary School on Friday morning, to talk about her work.
