A group of women have invested countless hours to ensure perfection as they prepare to march their way to the top of their game next weekend.

Members of the Central Pioneers Leisure Marching Alexandra group will be among those representing the district when the National Leisure Marching Event returns to Christchurch on March 6-7.

They will be among 78 teams competing.

The group has a small membership of loyal marchers who hope to see membership increase soon.

Members agreed it was friendship and companionship the group offered that had them coming back year after year.

Among them is coach Dawn McIntosh, who welcomes anyone to get in contact if they are keen to find out more about the group or to join.

The group, which will mark its 20th anniversary this year, trains once a week, but as nationals approach they have been meeting twice a week to perfect their already polished routine.

Member Maggie McLean, who has marched since she was 8 years old, said she “loves” marching, something that was made even more enjoyable by the friends she had made over the years.

“I just love it. It is fun and and it keeps you fit.”

Fellow marcher Jan Fraser has also enjoyed marching over the years, mainly for the companionship it offers.

“And it’s great exercise it’s good for the brain.”
