Alexandra welcomed schools from across the region last Sunday at the Uruuruwhenua Schools Kapa Haka Festival.

The event was co-ordinated by the Central Otago Rural Education Activities Programme (CO Reap).

CO Reap manager Bernice Lepper said 16 schools from Wanaka to Roxburgh took part in the event, which is held every two years, at Molyneux Park Stadium.

“It is a fun event – the schools come along, do two items each and at the end they do a massed item.”

The event was well attended – “you can’t find a car park, it is like a massive rugby game is on in Alexandra”.

The schools took part in kapa haka and waiata learning throughout the year, building up to these performances every second year, Mrs Lepper said.

With performances from 5-year-olds up to high school pupils there was much to see.

“They all just enjoy it so much,” she said. PHOTOS: SIMON HENDERSON
