The smell of Christmas wafted through the streets of Alexandra from the Central Otago Cake Decorating Club’s annual cake stall on Friday.

The cake stall has been an annual fixture for the small group of keen bakers and cake decorators for more than 19 years.

Club chairwoman Judith Crosland said the club was raising funds for the New Zealand Cake Guild Conference, which is being held in Alexandra in November next year.

The club has 16 members from Alexandra, Ranfurly, Cromwell, Wanaka and Queenstown.

It meets once a month on a Tuesday night.

Mrs Crosland said the group was a great way for people to get to know one another and try their hand at cake decorating.

“We’re happy to just get together. We share ideas. We have a demonstration each meeting,” she said.

Club secretary Denice Laird said she liked the camaraderie of the group.

“It’s a friendship-sharing thing,” she said.

“[Cake decorating] is a craft. It’s nice to have a group of ladies that can come together and talk about what you do.”

The club’s next meeting is on the third Tuesday in February at Alexandra Community House.
