A joint initiative for Conservation Week is helping Alexandra look its best.
The team from Department of Conservation (Doc) Central Otago and volunteers from Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful joined forces under sunny skies to help beautify the town over recent weeks.
While it was an opportunity to help prepare the town for the annual Alexandra Blossom Festival, it was also designed to commemorate Conservation Week, from September 15-23.
About 20 people assisted with the project on September 19, which included spreading mulch on gardens in the Alexandra station car park and alongside the Otago Central Rail Trail.
Doc provided staff to help for the day and the Central Otago District Council donated trailer loads of mulch.
Doc Central Otago operations manager Mike Tubbs said it was a way of giving back to the Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful team, which it had worked alongside for “20-plus years”.
“They started on the rail trail in the early ’90s and continued to do this, so it’s a way of saying thank you.”
Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful is one of about 45 groups Doc works with across Central Otago.
